Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota tragically passed away alongside his brother, André Silva, following a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025. Reports confirmed that Jota had undergone lung surgery shortly before the accident.
According to credible sources, Jota suffered from pneumothorax, a condition where the lung collapses. He underwent a minor medical procedure to treat the issue. After the surgery, his doctors advised him against air travel for some time, as it could pose serious health risks during recovery.
As a result, Jota and his brother opted to travel by road. Their plan included driving from Portugal to the Spanish city of Vigo, followed by a ferry trip from Santander to the United Kingdom.
The fatal crash occurred on the A-66 highway near Zamora, Spain. Reports from the Spanish Civil Guard stated that their Lamborghini car suffered a tire burst while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road and caught fire. Both Jota and his brother died at the scene.
A respiratory physiotherapist who had treated Jota, Miguel Gonçalves, confirmed that he had seen the footballer and his brother on the night of the accident. He stated they left around dinner time, and there were no signs of partying or reckless behavior prior to their departure.
Authorities have found no evidence of speeding, intoxication, or reckless driving. It was determined that the accident was caused by a sudden tire explosion, which led to the loss of vehicle control.Following the tragedy, Jota’s body was flown back to his hometown in Portugal for burial.
